For the First Time in their 30 Year Career, Regional Mexican Idols Los Huracanes del Norte Reach Number One on Billboard

Legendary Regional Mexican Act Lands #1 Spot on Billboard with “Nomas por tu Culpa”

Woodland Hills, CA -- According to Billboard Magazine’s upcoming October 18, 2003 issue, Los Huracanes Del Norte’s “Nomas Por Tu Culpa” (Because of You) has reached the # 1 position of the Regional Mexican Music Airplay list in the U.S. and Puerto Rico.

“Nomas Por Tu Culpa”, the second promotional cut from the group’s debut album with Univision Records “En El Tiempo”, was penned by Salvador Serna Del Rio and sent to radio nationally and Puerto Rico on July 16, 2003.  Billboard’s Regional Mexican Music Airplay Chart is based on programming airplay data in the U.S. and Puerto Rico compiled by Nielsen Broadcast Data System.

“It makes us very proud to know that after a long and successful career spanning over three decades, Los Huracanes Del Norte finally get to see the fruits of their hard work and occupy the position they very much deserve in Regional Mexican music.  On behalf of their Univision Records family we congratulate them and wish them many more number ones for many years to come,” stated Manolo Gonzalez, Senior VP Regional Mexican A&R and National Promotion, Univision Music Group.

“En El Tiempo” is comprised of 12 tracks, of which four are in the ‘corrido’ genre: “Baraja Ensangrentada” (Bloody Card Deck), “Carrera Infernal” (Race From Hell), “Corrido Del Grande” and “Cascos de Guacho” (Soldier Helmets).  Nonetheless, the album also includes romantic tracks like “Tu Fiel Prisionero” (Your Faithful Prisoner), “Ojitos Sonadores” (Dreamy Eyes), “Ya No Me Duele” (It Doesn’t Hurt Anymore) and the melancholic “Dale Su Bendicion” (Give Her Your Blessing).  According to Los Huracanes’ point of view, “the ‘corrido’ is the people’s authentic way of expression, because these songs talk about horses, race cars, honest immigrants crossing the border, popular heroes and other current events.  In the beginning the ‘corrido’ only dealt with Mexican revolution narrative and the heroes of that time.  We have done all types of ‘corridos’ and they have worked great for us.”

Spearheading a new generation of Los Huracanes del Norte, the group recently added new blood with the incorporation of 22-year-old Antonio García, son of Heraclio "Rocky" García, director, founder, basist and lead vocalist of the group, who joined the group in drums as soon as he graduated from high school.  The second addition was young and talented José Luis Mejía, a childhood friend of Heraclio’s sons, who joined as new accordionist and lead vocals on ‘Por tu culpa’.  The remainder of the group remains intact with Heraclio "Rocky" García and his brothers Jesús "Chuy" García, accordionist and second voice; Francisco "Pancho" García, six-string guitar; and Guadalupe "Lupillo" García, on saxophone.

Sharing their time between the United States and Mexico, Los Huracanes Del Norte’s 30-year career span has allowed them to record over 40 albums, nine of them on Fonovisa Records.  The group reached a milestone in 2002 with a Latin Grammy® nomination for Best Norteño Album for the recording “Mensaje De Oro.”  In addition, the group received the prestigious Mexican award El Heraldo and received the keys to the cities of Chicago, Illinois and Dallas, Texas.

Los Huracanes Del Norte’s ‘bailes’ are known as mass gatherings of 25 to 30 thousand people.  Perhaps one of the most memorable performances for the group was at legendary Mexico City venue ‘Cuatro Caminos’ mid 1979. Subsequently the group performed at the colossal Mexican Estadio Azteca with a capacity of 100,000 spectators and myriad performances throughout the United States and Mexico.
